The 49th Annual Meeting of the AHPCS will be located in one of the nation’s great cultural centers, Cleveland’s University Circle. Named the number-one arts district in the country in a 2021 USA Today contest, University Circle is home to the world-class Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland History Center with the Western Reserve Historical Society, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Orchestra at the legendary Severance Hall, the newly renovated Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. Of particular interest to AHPCS members is that our visit to Cleveland will coincide with the Print Club of Cleveland’s annual Fine Print Fair at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
All these wonderful riches are within walking distance of our hotel and conference base, the historic Glidden House. The Glidden House, was built in 1910 as the private residence of Francis Kavanaugh Glidden and his wife Mary. Frank was the eldest son of Francis Harrington Glidden, the famous Clevelander and founder of The Glidden Paint Company. The Glidden House is now on the National Register of Historic Places, and the original mansion home maintains most of its historic features including the library, parlor, and loggia.
We are making sure that the food at our Annual Meeting will be excellent. Lunch and dinner catering will be provided by the highly rated Marigold Catering. Breakfasts are provided by Glidden House and included in the room rate.

Why Cleveland?
With its location on the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, Cleveland grew into a major commercial and industrial metropolis by the late 19th century. It was among the top 10 largest U.S. cities for much of the 20th century, and the city’s cultural institutions reflect the great wealth generated by Cleveland’s industrial capacity.
By any measure, the Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the nation’s top museums. The CMA permanent collection is both broad and deep with fantastic holdings spanning over 6,000 years of art history. The opportunity to explore this large museum is not to be overlooked. Special focus will be on an exhibit of prints from the Cleveland Karamu House, an African American settlement house graphic arts program.
The Cleveland History Center is home to the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Crawford Auto Aviation Collection, the Gilded Age Hay-McKinney Mansion, and the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel. We will have a curator-led tour of highlights from the WRHS print and broadside collection and time to explore its other attractions.
In addition to our scheduled tours and conference events, Cleveland has a lot more to offer. Perennially rated as among the nation’s top symphony orchestras, the Cleveland Orchestra will be in town during our stay. Performances at the legendary Severance Hall, within walking distance to the Glidden House, can be booked individually at your own discretion. Cleveland is also home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an exciting multi-media attraction, unlike any other. The Rock Hall is in downtown Cleveland, accessible from University Circle by public transit or a short drive by car. The 10 acres of the Cleveland Botanical Gardens are close by as is the Museum of Natural History, which has received national recognition for its new renovation. Foodies may choose a field trip to Cleveland’s impressive West Side Market, the oldest operating indoor/outdoor market space in Cleveland.

Glidden House provides a complimentary breakfast buffet daily. Check in is at 4:00 pm, check out at noon. There is a parking fee of $12.00 per night, with roll in and out privileges.
Print Club of Cleveland’s Fine Print Fair
Our visit to Cleveland will coincide with the Print Club of Cleveland’s annual Fine Print Fair, a benefit for the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Department of Prints & Drawings, held in the museum’s beautiful atrium. This three-day fair hosts fine print dealers and publishers from across the nation. During the Fair you can browse and shop one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive displays of fine prints.
A Collectors Night reception will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. During this event, attendees have an opportunity to mingle and shop with fellow print enthusiasts and dealers while enjoying small bites and an open bar. Glidden House – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm: Morning welcome meeting and lectures. Speakers:
Dr. Sarah Banes, Assistant Curator, from the Blanton Museum at the University of Texas, will present a talk about the Philadelphia Print Club and the African American artists community of the early 20th century.
Professor Erin Benay, Case Western Reserve University, will speak on the Karamu House printmaking program. Karamu House, a Cleveland settlement program, opened in 1915. It supported African American artists, actors, dancers, print makers and writers. Professor Benay is also co-curator of the corresponding exhibit of prints at CMA.

Cleveland Museum of Art – Afternoon – self guided tours of Karamu House exhibit, and other CMA galleries.

Dr. James Brust, AHPCS Vice President, will speak about his ongoing research on the impact of the 19th century carte de visite on American lithography, with a look at rare original art created on carte de visite mounts.
Dr. Nancy Finlay, AHPCS Secretary, will speak on Alfred Pope and Theodate Pope Riddle, collectors of American prints, highlighting their Cleveland and Connecticut connections.

April 27, Sunday
Optional field trip to the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. The Butler Institute features an outstanding collection spanning three centuries of American art. This trip will be by bus and will include a box lunch.

Airport Transportation
Cleveland is accessible by air to Cleveland Hopkins International (CLE), which is about a 30 minutes drive to Glidden House. Public transit from the airport via Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is also available. The Red Line to Little Italy-University Circle Station will get you to within a fifteen minute walk to Glidden House. Trains run approximately every 15 minutes.
Amtrak serves Cleveland with four daily trains: the Floridian (trains 40 and 41) between Miami and Chicago, and the Lake Shore Limited (trains 48/448 and 49/449) between Chicago and New York City/Boston, however, early morning arrival and departure times are not convenient.
